Happy Pumpkin Month! (Almost!)
The nights are getting darker faster. Leaves are tumbling. Everything is being flavoured with the insides of jack-o-lanterns.
But it also means scary stories; lots of supernatural releases happen this month!
Here are some of the new book releases I’m looking forward to in October:
I remember when Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe was first released, and it seemed like every single BookTuber and reviewer had a copy. And they couldn’t stop raving about it.
I couldn’t wait to buy my own copy. I kept putting off actually reading it though, as I presumed the novel was going to be an emotional ride and I needed to be in the right frame of mind for that.
Fast forward several years– and I still haven’t read it. I think the expectation just kept growing and growing, until I just put it aside and never circled back to it.
So I was beyond excited when I saw the sequel was coming out next month – because that means the first one doesn’t have a dead-stop ending! Which means I can read it without so much fear of having my insides churned up and shredded.
And it means there’s more to come if I get a book hangover.
When I heard this was being described as “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets The L Word”, it was immediately added to my Want To Read list. I mean, come on!
From what I can gather, it’s about a witch who returns to her birth town for a magical competition, where she and two friends end up seeking revenge from one of the most powerful guys for dating all three of them at once.
I love a good team-up-for-revenge story, and throw in some magic and I’m definitely intrigued.
I’ll admit, I was initially pulled to this novel because the cover made me think it had something to do with American Royals by Katharine McGee. Yes, I judged a book by its cover.
Turns out, it has nothing to do with American Royals, but, by the time I realised, the synopsis had caught me. A clairvoyant travel agent, who tells people’s futures when she sings karaoke, joins forces with a detective and a group of her bar patrons to catch a killer while also solving the murder of her fiancé?
It either has too much going on, or it’s going to be an absolute heck of a ride – and based on the possibility of what could be in store, I’m willing to take the risk and give it a go.
And yet another with a supernatural charm (it is October, the season for these kinds of books). The Ex Hex won me over with the promise of “murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say.”
Apparently, the protagonist cursed her ex-boyfriend after a nasty breakup, but realises nine years later he’s still horrifically cursed. So when they finally meet again, they have to team up to find a way to fix it.
Sounds fun and intriguing, and a different kind of twist on the typical love story, so I’m looking forward to this one.
I am a sucker for a retold fairy tale. (Cinder, anyone?)
As you can probably guess, A Spindle Splintered is a re-telling of Sleeping Beauty. However, it also includes a multiverse, which I am a huge fan of. So, with two of my favourite story elements, I’m hopeful of great things with this!
Tonight We Rule the World is a coming-of-age story about a high-school senior and his friends rebuilding their lives after it’s revealed one of them has been sexually assaulted.
You know this is going to be emotional. You know it’s going to touch on powerful topics. I think it’s so important when a novel helps us navigate difficult life moments by showing there isn’t a right or wrong way to feel or react, so hopefully this novel adds to all the other novels that do that so well.
Those are a few of the new October book releases I’m looking forward to. What about you? Are you going to pick any of these up? Are there any books you’re excited about that I left off my list?
